Late night vandals are destroying Merivale’s bid to be greener. Shrubs in planter boxes along Papanui Rd, that are maintained by the Merivale Business Association and the city council, have been repeatedly destroyed. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has had concerns raised with them about the damage beside the Merivale Mall. Traiteur of Merivale owner and head of the business association, Maarten Loeffen, said it was a regular thing that had to stop. “Friday and Saturday night is when the damage occurs. It is

not only sad that they vandalise the plants but they also throw it against the buildings spreading dirt and rubbish all over the place,” he said. Mr Loeffen said it had been happening for years now and the city council will have to look at new ways to stop the damage. “I have approached the council with the idea to put a camera in my shop facing out towards the plants. I will look after it. “I have seen people doing this in the early hours of the morning but have not wanted to go out there by myself when there is more than one.” •Turn to page 5

Funding for several community projects will be decided tonight. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will discuss whether it will fund nine projects ranging from events to awards. The cost to the board will be $53,250 out of their $130,000 discretionary response fund. In the past, these projects have been put forward to the Strengthening Communities Fund but now the two have been combined to make one fund.

Community board deputy chairman David Cartwright said that it will not affect the way it funds projects. “It’s a city-wide change. Basically it is how the new budget has been arranged and they have combined the two funds,” he said. The new fund will have different times of when they can be applied for and the community board has spoken with most of those that apply to make sure they will not miss out. “With all the people we look after they have all came back and expressed thanks for the

communication.” Mr Cartwright said that money can be shifted into other areas to create funds for specific needs such as youth funding. “We see youth funds as very important and will continue to support those.” Nine projects currently wanting funding from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board are: • $12,000 towards Culture Galore 2016 event costs. • $8000 to run the Avice Hill Arts and Craft Festival 2016.

• $7000 to run the Celebrate Bishopdale community event. • $6000 to deliver a series of youth events and activities. • $6000 towards engaging with the community activities. • $4500 towards the running of the 2016 Garden Pride Awards. • $4500 towards Neighbourhood Week 2015. • $3750 towards the running of the 2016 Community Service Awards. • $1500 towards the costs of hosting bi-monthly networking meetings.

Driveway plan for church BY ANDREW KING Changes to the rebuild plan of an iconic church in Papanui have passed the first test. The new plan has a driveway that allows cars to drive up to the front door of the Christchurch North Methodist Parish. It will be ideal for weddings and funerals. Parish chairman Richard Chalklen along with Arrow International senior project manager Craig Byers presented the update to the ShirleyPapanui Community Board on Wednesday. The community board was happy with the plan and thought it was great that they had brought it to them so early in the process. Mr Chalklen said that now they have the community board’s approval, they can move onto the consent process with the aim to talk to all those affected if the consent is notifiable. “We will be talking to people if it is a notified consent. We have a strong connection to the area so we want their feedback.” Mr Chalklen said they have had a lot of comments from both within the church and outside of it. “It’s a response from both internal and external voices in the church on the design. Having it so you can drive up to the door is beneficial,” he said. The need for those who have

The Fendalton Bowling Club has applied for funding to repair sewer pipes. There was a blockage incident in late 2014 which was repaired immediately but professional advice was that it would happen again if the pipe was not replaced. The club has requested $6898 to fix the pipes before they host a number of international events over the next two seasons. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will make a decision on whether to fund the club today.

Mr Chalklen said the church was a landmark for the area and they are looking forward to the church being open soon to

continue their long history with the site. “We have been around that site for 160 years. People have said they wanted to see something coming down Harewood Rd now that the steeple has gone. It was a landmark.” Mr Chalklen said they will be installing a big window in the shape of a cross that will be

subtlety back lit to reinstate the landmark image the church is know for. “There will be a big cross at one end of the building with back lighting to make it a landmark for people in the area again.” He said the church should be open for events and services in the beginning of December.

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will set up a $5000 Youth Development Fund. The money will be for people aged 12-20. Applications will be to assist people in personal development and growth and representation at events. Successful applicants will be required to attend a youth celebration event hosted by the community board to report back on their experiences.

Key local project

The Elmwood Club has been nominated as a key local project by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board. The community board has recommended that $17,500 from the Metro Strengthening Communities Fund be allocated to the club. The Elmwood Club is a combination of sporting bodies: Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club, HSOB-Burnside Hockey Club, Elmwood Bowling Club, Elmwood Croquet Club, HSOB Football Club, Lincoln University Rugby Club and St Nicholas Netball Club. The club wants to take away the duplication of roles throughout allowing the pooling of resources to benefit those in the clubs.

Sports nut has eyes on sevens at Tokyo Burnside High student Becky Davidson is a top rippa rugby and touch player. She now has her eyes on playing sevens for New Zealand at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She talks to Fraser Walker-Pearce

AMBITIOUS: Becky Davidson’s goal is to represent New Zealand at sevens in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Thanks for chatting with me Becky. Now obviously you’re involved with heaps of sports, what is your favourite? How far do you want to go with it? Sevens, because I love the space and being able to run, and the environment and general fitness aspects. My goal is to make the New Zealand team and go to the Olympics, not Rio but the next one. If I keep training then for sure I think I can make it. You’re an ambassador for the Forward Foundation, what does that mean for people who don’t know what that is? How long have you been involved with it? How does it help you? I try to help promote minority sports, and I help set up organisations that girls can be involved in. I help with projects to get people involved in sports, for rugby I get involved with training sessions; people come to the trainings for fun, but hopefully it can become more competitive. You’re also involved with the New Zealand tag rugby team. Could you explain what that sport is and what tournaments

you have lined up for that? It’s pretty much an alternative to league, it’s rippa rugby basically. It’s league rules except you rip the tag off the player. I’m going to Australia for the World Cup in December. I reckon New Zealand have a very good chance of winning it. I think the New Zealand Maori team usually wins, it seems to be their main sport in the North Island. Are you still at school? What’s your favourite subject? Do you have a part-time job? Yes, I’m in year 13 at Burnside High School. My favourite subject is sports leadership. It’s where I learn to coach and go on courses, theory work and coach a team; I coach the Rolleston Primary School netball team, and they’re doing really well. I work for Sport Canterbury, doing Kiwi Sport holiday programmes in Rolleston

and Pioneer, I just started last holidays. I coach the juniors; at the moment – they love playing octopus and we just started basketball with them. How big is sport in your life? Do you have spare time at all? Could you run me through a typical week of practices and games? It’s huge; it takes up a lot of my time. If I’m not doing anything I’ll do Cross-Fit, I’ve been doing it all this year in Rolleston. Sometimes I have spare time! I do normal stuff; go on Facebook, watch TV, and I love Shortland St. Monday morning would start with Cross-Fit, at night I have a Canterbury women’s training course for rugby. Tuesday I coach the primary netball team, and have Suburbs rugby training; where I play centre or second five-eighth. Wednesday I do Cross-Fit in the morning, then a game of school girl rugby; then basketball training and netball training. Wednesday is definitely the hardest day, and I’m usually injured after most Wednesdays. Thursday I try to rest but I have rugby training for Suburbs. Friday I have a basketball game and Cross-Fit. On Saturday I coach netball, play netball and then rugby. Sunday I have a basketball game. But I think I might stop playing some of my other sports so I can start to focus on rugby.

Vandals target Merivale planter boxes •From page 1 Mr Loeffen confronted a lone plant destroyer one morning only to receive a lot of abuse for doing so. “I asked one young man if he would like me to come around to his parents’ house and rip out their plants.” The young man’s response was unprintable. Community board deputy chairman David Cartwright said there was really no excuse for it but they would be looking at ways to prevent the trees from getting ripped out. “What a bunch of idiots the city has. Can’t

they leave the trees alone,” he said. “We need to build a better fixing system for the planter boxes that allows water to pass through and keeps the trees in place. “That may be funded by the Merivale Business Association. We may make an application to the city council for funding for the upgrades.” Mr Loeffen said the trees had been secured but it didnt stop the vandals. “Measures have been taken to prevent the damage. They have been wired in. People still just rip them out.”

Bus stop concerns BY ANDREW KING

Combining a bus stop and loading zone in Papanui is causing problems. Concerns have been brought to the attention of the FendaltonWaimairi Community Board about a combined bus stop and loading zone on Papanui Rd in front of Westpac. The problems occur when passengers are waiting for the bus and local businesses need to load or unload stock in the same area. Buses also sometimes block part of the Aikmans and Papanui Rds intersection while waiting for trucks or vans to unload. A business owner has brought the problem to the community board saying that it could be solved by reversing the bus stop and loading zone around. Currently the bus stop is closer to the Aikmans and Papanui Rds intersection with the loading zone slightly north of it on Papanui Rd. Community board deputy chairman David Cartwright said it was great that the businessman had brought the matter to the attention of the board. “He has expressed the need to fix this problem and from there we will be able to move it forward,” he said. Mr Cartwright said that someone from the city council’s traffic department is now involved and will take the necessary steps to find a solution.

Have you ever been injured? What’s your worst? Did you have to take time off sport? At the moment I’ve chipped my pinky finger, but I just tape it up and keep going. My knees are pretty sore from being overworked. I actually took it down a notch for about a week, but then I just taped up my injuries and kept going. If you can’t be a professional sportsperson, what would you want to be? I guess I’d want to be a nutritionist, or a sports coach, and I was also looking into the police force. But whatever it is, it’d probably have to be something physical. I’m very interested in nutrition, and I’ve been to a few people that have helped me with diets and other stuff.

Submissions on proposed pool for St Albans/ Edgeware A new pool for the St Albans and Edgeware areas has been proposed. Public submissions to the city council on the plan closed on July 1. Twenty-nine submissions were made, 23 were for the pool. Reporter Andrew King takes a snapshot look at them • Rosemarie Haywood, St Albans My concern is the parking on Edgeware Rd. Cars park over my driveway. I work at the emergency department at Christchurch Hospital and want access out of my property at all times please. • Michael Parker, Edgeware I believe there should be a ladder in the northeast corner of the pool for easier access to and from the pool. The lawn area including the covered outdoor seating area too should be removed from the complex, allowing for the pools and buildings to be moved on the site to the west allowing more space for car parking. Just because there is limited space on the site, it should not negate the requirements of the Resource Management Act requiring a minimum of 42 car parks. There should be a requirement that all landscaping be maintained within the 300mm on both sides of the access way. Also there needs to be lighting installed to ensure the safety of pedestrians. This can be done discretely but effectively with the different types of lighting

available these days. As there are no details of the proposed landscaping along the path to Trafalgar St, there needs to be adequate lighting to ensure pedestrian safety. Once again, this can be done discretely but effectively with the different types of lighting available these days. • A Connon, Edgeware The school buses that bring groups to the pool will need a place to park their buses while they wait for students. I cannot see any provision that takes this into consideration. Also there is potential for Trafalgar St to become parked out, if cars were to park on both sides of the road, this street would become a single lane. Yellow lines on one side of Trafalgar St to control it being overused by parked vehicles and longer-term bus parking designated. • Cameron Walker, St Albans I definitely encourage the replacement of the local community pool. However, I live right over the eastern fence of the proposed site and have some concern over

whether appropriate consideration has been made with regard to crowd noise. I would like the city council to engage with an appropriate consultant to help ensure that appropriate acoustic deflection is included in the final design. • Fleur Walden, St Albans While I wholeheartedly approve of children learning to swim (I learnt to swim in the old Edgeware Pool) and folks enjoying an outdoor pool. My concern as a neighbour is the amount of noise. Has due consideration been made to the travel of sound? Will there be baffles of some sort to help deflect the sound of children’s

screams and also perhaps the filtration of plant room noise? As there is no planned landscaping for the eastern side of the site, I am concerned at the probability of noise levels rising. I want the city council to consult and utilise modern acoustic baffles or material in the concrete structures (walls) of the changing sheds and clubrooms.

Extreme cold causes problems

The association is aware that there is significant demand for on-street and off-street parking particularly at peak times in the Edgeware Village. We believe that parking can be managed satisfactorily if all parties work together to prepare a plan to utilise all potential available parking in that area. The extreme frosts of the last week have resulted in a number of calls to properties where hot water cylinders have leaked and caused flooding in the building or where sprinkler systems have frozen solid and leaked. I can certainly understand, turning the hot water tap on in the kitchen at home first thing in the morning has resulted in slushy ice in the sink. We were fortunate enough though not to have our pipes freeze solid enough to split. There were also a number of car crashes caused by black ice. If it looks wet at all on those -5 deg C mornings then the road is almost certainly frozen solid. We all need to drive accordingly. It’s probably therefore a good time to mention the metre/heater rule again. This is a mantra the Fire Service has invented to give a rule of thumb about anything combustible near to something that could set it on fire. The drying of clothing in front of a fireplace or heater is fine except for the human tendency to want things to happen quickly causes us to place the damp clothes too close. We like to see the steam rise. Then the phone goes, or tea needs to be cooked or the kids do what kids do and attract our attention. Placed closer than a metre that steam will rise until no moisture is left. The clothing will keep on heating. It might scorch. It might ignite. The metre/heater rule simply saves this from happening.

Ronald McDonald’s new board member A Christchurch lawyer has been appointed as the newest member of the Ronald McDonald House South Island’s board table. Julie Hands has been bestowed the Institute of Directors’ First Steps in Governance Award, giving her an internship position on the charity’s board. Institute of Directors’ Canterbury branch chair Janice Fredric said the judges were impressed by Ms Hands’ ambition, focus and leader-

ship potential. “Julie is an exceptional young woman who has already taken on a range of leadership roles in both her career and the community. Her breadth of skill and empathy for the cause will make her a real asset to the Ronald McDonald House South Island board.” Ms Hands, a resource management and commercial solicitor for Duncan Cotterill, says the award is an honour.

“The board seems as though it has a great dynamic and there’s a lot of diverse knowledge and experience there. Family affair on court Two mothers were able to teach their daughters a lesson on the basketball court. Halswell players, Marinda Van Vuuren and Fionna Chapman came up against their daughters Natasha Van Vuuren, and Annalia Chapman who were playing for Minties in a premier grade game at Cowles Stadium. Halswell won 54-47. Halswell player, Marinda van Vuuren said: “We beat them (Minties). But it was a very close game. I don’t think I ended up marking Natasha because she didn’t want to mark me. We only get competitive when it comes to sports, never at home. We’ve got a very friendly rivalry.” Fionna Chapman was also playing for Halswell alongside her other daughter Aleni, as well as playing against her daughter Annalia. The Halswell Women’s Premier team last tasted success winning the first round Patron’s trophy in 2013, while it last won the Championship in the 1993 to 1995 seasons. The Halswell basketball club is one of the oldest single sex clubs in the Canterbury competition. The club was formed back in 1969, and the founding members were Helen Lightfoot, Dianne Burrowes, Alice Whittaker, Francie Stuart and the Halswell policeman’s wife, Norma de Zwart. New Brighton will again be home to the finish line of the Coast to Coast in 2016 and beyond. This year was the first time the famous race finished in New Brighton after previously ending in Sumner. The finish line will be set up outside the New Brighton Library by the pier on the weekend of February 12, 2016. Organisers have also locked in New Brighton past 2016 but could not confirm for how many years. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen said it was “wicked.” Mr Zaanen was a big part of this year’s event, he was the transition manager at the finish line. He said it was a big part of the summer events calendar for the suburb and to have it confirmed the Coast to Coast was returning was a massive boost. “The events calendar we’re working on at the moment is fantastic. New Brighton is the place to be and is the new events centre outside of the

city centre. It’s exciting to have so many events coming to New Brighton and obviously a lot of local ones are going gangbusters too. So to have more events is good.” Mr Zaanen said the event worked well in New Brighton as both the event and the suburb are going through a rejuvenation process. “That’s such a big part of it, the vision of rejuvenation for New Brighton, and the Coast to Coast, with both in a rejuvenating process. There is a lot of energy and effort in doing both and that’s bloody exciting.” There are already plans to improve the finish line experience but details on those improvements were not available. Entries are already open for next year’s Coast to Coast with prizes up for grabs for people who enter before July 31 including a $5000 sponsorship package. Organisers have also added a school category with the minimum age being lowered to 14. The new category is a team event for three people. $250,000 raised for Canty rescue chopper This year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal has raised more than $250,000 for Canterbury’s rescue helicopter. This is part of $1.5m raised across the country. All donations from the Westpac Chopper Appeal are distributed back to the 16 rescue helicopter services across the country, meaning money raised locally, stays local. Westpac’s director of corporate affairs, Sue Foley, said the total raised is an outstanding effort. “New Zealanders have once again shown their support rallying behind their local rescue helicopters,” said Ms Foley.

“We’d like to thank all of those who generously dug deep and donated, along with everyone who was involved in the fundraising events in their communities. “The helicopters provide such a vital service that saves lives on a daily basis. It’s important for us to continue to play our part and raise awareness as well as much-needed funds to keep them in the air.” Westpac employees were also crucial to the success of this year’s result with fundraising initiatives organised around the country as well as hitting the streets to collect $128,000 on the nationwide Chopper Street Appeal day.

Winter gardening Susan Sanders, section curator of the central rose garden in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, is hosting a demonstration on the intricacies of the rose pruning process. New diabetes exercise group starts in Christchurch

ype 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.” For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese. The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits. “The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says. “And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.” Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. Among the company of Airport Ambassadors are 16 who have been shining the light of true direction and guidance since the very beginning of the Ambassador Programme. Well, I used to be. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my demeanour changed, and it wasn’t long before my treatment became a lonely and nerveracking journey,” says Miretta, a Look Good Feel Better workshop participant. That’s why Look Good Feel Better exists. The national charity supports Kiwis at a time when they need it most, by providing an opportunity for participants to claim back their personality beyond being a cancer patient - and learn practical tools to combat the ongoing visual and emotional effects of therapy. “It truly was a morale-boosting makeover, I felt like one of the group instead of a patient. It boosted and improved my selfesteem – and felt so darn good!” Miretta says. “It’s often the first time many women will be seen by others without their wig or be touched by a person that isn’t doing so for medical purposes,” Clare O’Higgins, Look Good Feel Better’s general manager, says. “I rarely let people get close, other than those who are dear to me, but the women there all

ew offerings in the programme for Term 3 are Egyptian Cooking, which aims to deliver a good insight into the culinary history of Egypt as well as the culture and social habits. Empowerment is a workshop which will guide and inspire you to reconnect with your authentic self. It will support you on your journey to celebrate your accomplishments and much more. On offer as well is a weekend workshop on Hand Quilting where you will learn to make a sample piece. The workshop will cover methods such as putting the quilting design onto different coloured fabrics, and colour, designs and patterns of fabric are taught. Risingholme offers a wide range of languages. This term, Samoan Language is on offer. This introductory course is for those who have no prior knowledge of the Samoan language. It is a beginner’s course for those learning to speak a new language. A key aim of the course is to

introduce students to the Samoan language within the classroom but to also give them tools and strategies to apply their learning in settings outside the classroom. The course will benefit anyone who wishes to learn the Samoan Language for personal, professional or other reasons. The Centre is also offering a full range of Te Reo classes. Currently back home in Lyttelton and working on some new tunes, well travelled violinist and composer, Fiona Pears is putting together an intimate show for later this month. “I thought I should put my fiddle fingers to good use and do a little winter show,” said Fiona. “Where better to do it than the lovely "SHE" in Governors Bay!” Fi will be will be doing a small concert there on Friday July 31st at 7pm and will be performing with her band made up of Ian Tilley on piano, Mike Ferrar on guitar and Peter Fleming on double bass. “It will be a mix of old and new tunes and people can get food and drinks - hot chocolate being a specialty there!” Tickets $35 on sale now at SHE 329 9825 or online at www.shechocolat.com
